I. Motivation
Based on the exceptionally significant location of
Jerusalem/al-Quds as symbol of holiness and peace in the world's collective conscious,
and
·
in view of the painful status quo that threatens this holy city and the
unremitting, sordid aggressions against it,
·
the international silence vis-à-vis violations against the land,
religious sites and the lives of indigenous people,
·
The deception orchestrated by the other's media
outlets that camouflage, falsify and fabricate reality,
a grave need urges us to hold the conferenceunder the
heading: "Jerusalem in the Eyes of Contemporary World Literature" in
an attempt to restore the City's hijacked dignity, inscribe its glory in human
memory and retain its symbolism of peace and holiness.
II. Objectives
The conference seeks to achieve a number of objectives:
1.
Stressing the global importance of Jerusalem amongst peoples regardless
of their religious beliefs, sectarian tendencies or political orientations.
2.
Emphasizing the City's symbolism for peace and brotherly co-existence.
3.
Getting acquainted with the creative accounts and portraits of the City
in different languages and literatures.
4.
Confirming the human-place bond.
III. Themes
The conference hopes to cover the following themes:
1. Literature
Researchersshed light and analyze the literary works
written in different languages across the globe during the past two centuries.
This includes imaginary literature and travel literature as well, aiming to
present the portrait of Jerusalem in the imagination of writers.
2. Art and Media
Researchers present the image of Jerusalem in global
art and media with emphasis on how that image is distorted and manipulated.
Visual arts, films, conflict reports can all be explored.
3. Orientalism
Researchers submit critical readings of contemporary
orientalists' views (19th and 20th centuries) towards the
City.
4. Translation
Researchers look critically into the translation relevant
to the City, particularly the translators' normative behavior in communicatingits
true image, on the one hand, and identifying what ought to be translated into
different languages in order to put it more in the eyes of the world, on the
other hand.
5. Education
Researchers present a critical and panoramic analysis
of what the elitist educational institutions (of various stages) offer on the
City in their curricula. Such accounts can hopefully point outthe potential
pitfalls and shortcomings and propose solutions.
6. The Hashemite Custodianship
Researchers write aboutthe Hashemite role (past and
present) in the protection and restoration of the holy sites, and persistently
addressing the world community concerning that.
